Rear Admiral Michael McDevitt, U.S. Navy (Ret.) is vice president and director of CNA Strategic Studies, a division of CNA’s Center for Naval Analyses that he helped launch.

Before joining CNA, McDevitt spent 34 years in the Navy, where he held four at-sea commands, including an aircraft carrier battle group, and concluded his career as the Commandant of the National War College in Washington, D.C.

McDevitt has been the director of the East Asia Policy office for the Secretary of Defense during the first Bush Administration and the Director for Strategy, War Plans and Policy (J-5) for the Commander-in-Chief, Pacific Command. In addition to his management and leadership responsibilities, McDevitt has been an active participant in conferences and workshops on security issues in East Asia, and has had a number of papers published in edited volumes on this subject.

He received a bachelor’s degree in U.S. history from the University of Southern California and a master’s degree in American diplomatic history from Georgetown University. He is also a graduate of the National War College in Washington, D.C.
