Marine Corps Program

The Marine Corps Program manages CNA support to the Marine Corps, executed within research divisions of the Center for Naval Analyses — both at headquarters and on-site at key Marine Corps commands in the CNA Field Program. The program deploys analysts to exercises and all major operations involving Marine Corps forces.

Dr. Daniel Powell describes participating in Talisman Sabre 2019, a multinational exercise in Australia. He drew upon his years of experience as a field representative to Marine Task Force 76 in Okinawa, Japan, as he monitored amphibious landings, searched for hiding Marines, and tracked air operations — while dodging kangaroos.

A Special Study Influences Special Operations

U.S. Marine Forces Special Operations Command asked CNA to analyze whether they needed to create new occupational specialties. Dr. Michelle Dolfini-Reed showed an improved return on investment by employing specialist Raiders rather than infantry Marines in special operations.

Floating Warehouses and Flying Marines

When the Marine Corps needed to send an entire expeditionary brigade to the Persian Gulf in less than two weeks, it depended upon the Maritime Prepositioning Force. CNA analysts had helped develop this novel force from a blank sheet of paper to tanks on the ground.
