Using Analytics to Improve Officer Safety
Funded by the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), CNA’s Center for Justice Research and Innovation uses data-driven research and analysis while working with law enforcement agencies to analyze thousands of police incident data to support the development of a risk assessment model. This model will help officers assess risk and take appropriate safety protocols in real time when responding to incidents.
CNA analyzes five years of incident data from participating law enforcement agencies to identify incident characteristics associated with negative officer safety outcomes. Using machine learning techniques, CNA produces a risk assessment model for each agency to link incident characteristics with officer safety outcomes.
CNA also works with participating agencies to identify best practices and recommendations to reduce risks to officer safety in the line of duty.
This program is part of the BJA Preventing Violence Against Law Enforcement Officers and Ensuring Officer Resilience and Survivability (VALOR) Initiative, which is an effort to improve the immediate and long-term safety, wellness, and resilience of our nation’s law enforcement officers.
