Representation Within Occupations. As was
noted previously, the USCG does not have any combat restrictions—all occupations are open to both men and women. By gender, USCG female officers were underrepresented in tactical operations and engineering and
maintenance, and overrepresented in the non-occupational area (Table 8.8). By race/ethnicity, minority officers were overrepresented in the non-occupational area; Black officers were underrepresented in tactical
operations; Hispanic officers were underrepresented in engineering and maintenance. Compared to the overall DoD, the USCG officer corps comprised, proportionally, more engineering and maintenance officers and
fewer health care providers. The difference in health care can be partially explained by the USCG's reliance on the Public Health Service for some of its medical and dental care.
